Steven K. Green

Steven K. Green is the Fred H. Paulus Professor of Law and affiliated professor of history and religious studies at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. A nationally recognized expert in First Amendment law and history, he has authored eight books and more than 60 scholarly articles and book chapters. His most recent book, The Grand Collaboration: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and the Invention of American Religious Freedom (2024), examines the intellectual foundations of religious liberty in the United States. Green has also contributed to approximately 30 amicus curiae briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court and is currently serving as an expert witness in multiple legal challenges involving Ten Commandments statutes. He holds a juris doctor from the University of Texas and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina.
