Harold G. Koenig

Harold G.Koenig, MD, received his undergraduate education at Stanford University, attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his training in geriatric medicine and psychiatry, as well as earning a Master of Health Science degree, at Duke University. Dr. Koenig is board-certified in general psychiatry and was formerly board-certified in family medicine, geriatric medicine, and geriatric psychiatry. He serves as Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University Health Systems. Dr. Koenig has over 650 scientific peer-reviewed academic publications, more than 100 book chapters, and 68 books. He is the lead author of the Handbook of Religion and Health (2024), with Tyler VanderWeele (Harvard School of Public) and John Peteet (Harvard Medical School). In 2022 and 2024, Dr. Koenig was ranked #1 in the world (lifetime) among highly ranked scholars in the academic discipline of spirituality and 29th in psychiatry. In June 2023, he was ranked 10th in the world and 7th best in the U.S. by Research.com in the overall category of Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists.
